International Women's Day

By Vanishing Inc. - Friday, March 8, 2019

The gender disparity in magic is an old problem. Men at magic conventions greatly, woefully outnumber women. Magic conventions are the only occasions I've seen where the men's rooms have lines and the women's rooms are empty.

We've always envisioned the Magfest as an inclusive event, and one that would pave the way for female magicians. We've featured female performers on our stages, but even our youth program struggled to attract young female magicians. Where are they?

Well, in January 2019 they were at the Columbus Magifest! We were delighted to offer youth scholarships to nine young, female magicians. We were touched by a scene just after midnight in which a young female magician from our program was holding court, informally lecturing a card trick to four of our male youth scholars. It was a refreshing scene, and one we hope to continue to expand.

If you're a female magician under 18 or you know of one, PLEASE suggest they apply to the Magifest Youth Scholar program. We hope to encourage the next generation of young magicians, and to see more women involved in our craft.
