At The Table - April 2019 - magic

First up this month you might remember his strange name from Palms of Steel or the New York Coin Magic Symposiums, seen him online at Reel Magic Magazine, or read his column in the pages of Genii. No matter how you know Kainoa Harbottle's material, you also know he brings with him an engaging personality, an off-beat sense of humor, and some of the cleanest coin magic you will ever see.

Originally hailing from Honolulu, Hawaii, Kainoa grew up "in the trenches," performing close-up magic in the hotels of Waikiki and the outer islands. He eventually moved to Los Angeles, where he was a Junior Member at the Magic Castle, and then headed further east, teaching for over a decade in the University of Delaware's English and Theater Departments while finishing a dissertation on (surprise, surprise) magic in the nineteenth century. A scholar of magic's history and an innovator of one of its most challenging genres, Kainoa's thinking is considered revolutionary by many of his contemporaries, and he enjoys surprising other magicians by making the most difficult material look effortless.

Next up we have Erik Tait, who came to the attention of the magic community when he won the 2018 IBM Gold Cups Close Up Competition. Since then, he has appeared on Penn & Teller: Fool Us and released a string of wildly popular effects. Now Erik lives in Columbus, OH and performs for Fortune 500 companies as well as performs on comedy shows and festivals across the country. In this lecture, he details some of his personal routines that he uses in his strolling work, as well as when he wants to absolutely wow an audience. This lecture contains material for all skill levels, and some close-kept secrets that will raise your sleight of hand to the next level.

Generally, if I am interested in either of the ATT lectures that appear in one month, I purchase both because the value is insane. This month, I was more interested in Erik Tait and ended up getting Kainoa Harbottle as a bonus (no disrespect to Kainoa, his coin work as is great as anyone in the world).
Erik Tait is clearly a working pro who entertains audiences and thinks through not only the technical aspect to his magic but every word he delivers appears to be carefully crafted for maximum entertainment. He has quickly become one of my favorite magicians. Some of his work is very technically demanded and I probably will never put in the work to do it all, but there’s plenty to get out of this and learn.
I generally thought everything was good, but I really liked his version of Anniversary Waltz – took it away from the traditional presentation angle and opened up a whole new idea I never would have thought of.
Kainoa started off his lecture with a blockbuster coin routine and some of his coin vanishes really fool me (and it’s hard to fool a magician with a coin vanish). Be prepared to put in the work but his stuff is top notch too.
Overall, I give this month’s ATT lecture an A plus.

I have been purchasing more at the table lectures, I stopped doing so for a while because I would have the same lectures put out on penguin. I must say this month of these two was extremely impressive. I got so much out of these two lectures it's beyond words. Made the other ATTL look mediocre.

Erik gave up some things that a lot of magicians may think are pipe dreams...but I got so much material to blend with my own that it was worth 5x what I paid. Kainoa gave up a coin workers dream, and I'm no coin guy but OMG...with what he revealed willake me one. I'm a bar worker and it's very difficult to find modular, high impact and less angly stuff. These guys delivered! Best month of lectures in a long time.
