Wordsmyth - magic

We are very proud to present Francis Menotti's hit parlor trick, which just fooled Penn & Teller on 'Fool US'. Wordsmyth is mentalism with fascinating props and an intriguing plot.

In an amazing coincidence, a spectator randomly selects a word from a dictionary as participants take randomly selected Scrabble tiles from a net bag. These tiles are formed into any word...that perfectly matches the prediction.

Like all of Francis's work, this is everything we love about great magic. He has spent years refining the presentation and method, he has chosen an offbeat premise, and he has whittled it down to the potent essentials. It is, truly, a worker.

What do you get, you ask? Everything. You get the forcing bag, the necessary Scrabble tiles, the custom made tray for the tiles (which has the slickest switching device you can imagine built into it), the fake-tip pencil, and the perfect storage case to keep the props together. You also get a DVD detailing every aspect of the trick and presentation. The only thing you need to supply is a soft-back book or dictionary.

Is it hard to do? Not at all. This is one that you can insert into your parlor show to add something truly unique and different.

What if I'm performing in another language? Bueno! Bien! Gut! We have decals available upon request so you can force words in German, Spanish, and French. You can choose these when you add the product to your cart.

"If you like to stupefy, mystify, and flabbergast your audiences, then you will definitely want this lexical trick which will amuse, delight, charm, and entertain the most discriminating crowds (not to mention deceive, fool, and hoodwink them)." John Lovick

andy asks: You may not want to post this question, but a private email answer would be appreciated. I bought Wordsmith some time ago, but gave it to a friend who couldn't afford to do so. Now I'd like to get it again, but I have a question: Have they added other words to the single word available when I bought it?

    • 1. Vanishing Inc. Magic responds: The word is the same, but if you email us before ordering, we can arrange for a different word.

I saw Francis perform and explain this in the summer of 2014 and I've been anxiously awaiting its release ever since. I saw him easily fool an audience full of magicians with this trick. It's a wonderful effect and a real worker. You'll be happily adding this to your own show in no time.

I recommend “Wordsmyth” to those of you looking for a decidedly different mental magic routine for small audiences. It’s easy to execute, packs small, has minimal set-up time, and gets lots of audience members in on the magical word-play.

The method will fly by even the smartest folks in the room because—and this is a wonderful subtlety: Each participant will actually see the tile that they select in the final reveal. Also, all the spectators—even the final ones—who remove letters from the “normal” mesh bag will actually feel dozens of tiles as they make their choice. The only discrepancy that occurred to me (an avid Scrabble player) is that the probability of spectators pulling tiles that make up a seven-letter word is about 15 percent—and that’s assuming perfect anagrammatic skills by the performer. Realizing this can put a skeptical spectator on the path to backtracking the method, but because there are (at least) four distinct deceptive principles at work, it is unlikely that a layman will draw a correct conclusion.

What a great piece of magic, and a lot of fun to perform. I was thrilled when it came available for purchase. The material you receive in the mail is high quality. However, anyone buying this trick needs to know that there is only one word/finish included. Meaning the same person/people can not see the you perform this trick more than once. It would have been nice if they would've included more than one finishing word.
