John Archer is one of Vanishing Inc's very favorite comedy magicians. The energy he puts into every performance is amazing. He's insanely funny, but unlike many other comedy magicians, he also really thinks about his magic.
Collard is a comedy effect (expect no other with John Archer) where you bring out a cuddly toy dog and tell the audience that it needs a name. The audience work together to create a random name, which really is a free choice. A spectator then takes a look at the dog's name tag: amazingly it has the freely selected name written on it.
You'll learn a lot from this routine. It's easy to perform and its construction allows you to have a lot of fun with your audience. It's the perfect way to add an entertaining and fooling five minutes to your act.
Unfortunately, what Mr. Archer does so well is hard for me to translate into practice. But that's not his fault at all.The premise is clever, and fun to play with, and the trick certainly delivers.My only downside was that the gaff had some flaking problems. But it took me all of 5 minutes to cut circles out of construction paper and I was back in business.Great trick.
Enjoying this tremendously. I wish the gimmick recessed into the tag a little bit more. It would give it a definite feel when it "locks" in place. The height of the felt covered magnet should have been a little lower from the top edge of the tag.
This is a great comedy presentation for the Koran Medallion. However, I do have a bit of a problem with Archer's routine as shown in the video. I asked myself, why would you ask the audience to come up with the dog's name when you have already named it? Archer, on the video, seems to be saying that he wasn't sure he would have time to do the trick, so he named the dog before the show. I prefer to say at the outset that I have already named the dog, but I'm not sure I like it. Let's see if the folks can come up with a better name. This way, the routine concludes by comparing the names, only to find that the audience and I were thnking of the same name.
GREAT effect. But the explanation of the effect on the DVD was very poorly done. I think this is because it's a recording of a magic lecture that he conducted and was not actually filmed as an explanation of the commercial effect.The explanation is hastily done and is all about his own personal gaff that he created from cardboard; it's not about the actual materials that you receive with the effect. So, I'm only slightly more educated about the workings of the effect now than I was after I watched the DVD. I've got a handful of materials that are supposed to be put together in some way. But I couldn't even begin practicing this effect right now if I wanted to. Also, as a side-note, the DVD would not play in my new iMac computer. I had to play it in a proper DVD player. I'm not sure if that's a glitch with this particular disc or is something to do with the UK manufacturing.NOTE: This review does not reflect on Vanishing Inc at all. They've been absolutely fantastic in every order I've ever placed with them. It's just that this particular effect doesn't meet the normal expectations.
