Cylinder and Coins Cylinder and Coins Cylinder and Coins Cylinder and Coins Cylinder and Coins Cylinder and Coins Cylinder and Coins

Joshua Jay has rebuilt one of the greatest close up magic tricks of the last century from the ground up to be more organic and entertaining than ever. A classic of magic has been reborn for a modern audience.

John Ramsay’s classic coin trick “Cylinder and Coins” is one of the most important magic tricks ever created. Like the Cups and Balls or an Ace Assembly, it is a rite of passage that all serious magicians must tackle at some point. Offering so many moments of genuine surprise, it is everything that is great about close up magic.

However, unlike other classics of magic, it is rarely performed by the current crop of magicians. That changes today.

While Joshua Jay’s “Cylinder and Coins” keeps the same basic idea as the original, nearly everything else has been changed. This includes many of the props and the addition of a stunning kicker ending that gives the routine a more complete conclusion. We don’t want to spoil anything. So, check out the full performance in the trailer above before continuing and you’ll see what we mean.

Everything You Need to Know about Joshua Jay’s “Cylinder and Coins”

Joshua’s routine has been in development for more than ten years, and it’s one of his most heralded sequences. He has performed it on national television in the United States and abroad, and it has been exclusively in his repertoire, unpublished…until now.

The Handling

There are many structural changes to the original routine. Joshua has reduced the standard use of four coins down to three as it helps the trick be less repetitive and eliminates many handling issues. The wand has also been eliminated as it’s not a prop often found in today’s magic acts.

The Props

Speaking of unfamiliar objects, this effect typically used a leather cylinder which, to most audiences, looked like a magic prop. For this version, a rolled-up dollar bill is used instead. It feels far more organic and innocent. You don’t have to use an American bill either as you receive the necessary gimmicks to quickly transform any bill into your “cylinder”.

John Ramsay’s classic routine also had a piece of cork transpose with the coins. This out-of-place prop often needed extra explanation. In this version, Joshua uses a finger ring. An object that is recognizable and identifiable without ever having to say a word, and is easier to manipulate.

The Gimmicks

This routine also introduces the magic community to a brand-new version of “Triad Coins” that helps make the vanishes easier and more effective than ever. For the first time, we’re including dollar sized “Triad Coins” constructed of replica Morgan Dollars. They are a stunning prop and the perfect size for performing “Cylinder and Coins”.

Those familiar with the original “Cylinder and Coins” effect will be happy to learn that the stack of coins in this version is not “static”. You receive a special something that adds a fairness to the routine never seen before. You can interact with the spread and even lift a coin off.

With this precision-crafted professional “Cylinder and Coins” kit, you’ll get everything you need to insert this showstopping new routine into your set. The one-of-a-kind stack of coins, the first-ever official “Triad Coins” dollar set, gimmicks for your bill, the finger rings, and the very special something for the end of the routine, are all included. The props are of the highest quality.

Get ready to unlock the secrets to one of the greatest close up magic tricks of all time: “Cylinder and Coins”.

IMPORTANT: Since filming the trailer, we had to change how this product is shipped. The shot glass no longer comes pre-fllled. But it is a very simple task that takes just a few seconds to do.

Cylinder is fascinating. The routine and ideas show an extraordinary attention to detail, practicality, and artistic subtlety. Joshua’s routine is quick, and that is great! I will incorporate several modifications to suit my performance preferences but it will take some practice and performances to gauge audience feedback. The routine and set are great, but I am privy to the leather cylinder and purchased the brown one from Vanishing (it’s really beautiful)! Time to start the brainstorming, routining, scripting, and practicing now. Buy Cylinder! It is a beautiful set and routine- create your own! Cylinder is a wonderful new approach to Ramsey’s Cylinder and Coins! The props are very cool and practical.

I am enjoying the props, the supporting video very much. More importantly, I am enjoying being part of the thought process. I shall use some of it but not all. I spent an hour and a half watching Tim Conover hone his presentation of this classic an age ago after a convention in Washington, DC. Now with these beautiful props I can start my own journey. Thank you Josh.

I was a bit apprehensive to order as I’m not a fan of the regular triad set but ordered anyway. Wow massive upgrade to the quality of the triad coins! My old set, the half dollar ones, are noisy and wobbly when all together. I never bothered to use them honestly due to those factors. With this set both issues are non existent. ?? All props are A+!!! Stellar job guys!

Great for someone that wants to do this classic. Fairly simple to do and it's modular so you can easily use what you like.

Really good explanation for the Cylinder and Coins from Joshua!

I was reluctant to purchase this item because I already have a cylinder purchased years ago from another magic dealer and coins that allowed me to perform the effect BUT I wanted to give it another go and I am satisfied with the product I have received- the triad coins are better than I thought they would be based on some reviews - the stack with the extra coin is terrific and I prefer using the ring instead of cork - the shot glass puts it over the top and now I have a cylinder and coin routine I can perform and feel good with my props - it is expensive but I believe it is worth it - and of course you get Josh and his excellent teaching.

A wonderful deconstruction of the inner workings and analysis for creating a surreal performance alternate handling of Ramsey's timeless effect. Well done!

I have been doing coin work for more than 50 years now, including several variations on the classic Ramsay Coin Cylinder routine. Jay's version is not only a great innovation on the original concept, but the gaffs provided are very good quality, and since they are made from "replica" Morgans, they much less expensive than getting a custom set made from real Morgans (I know, because over the years I have invested in some!). The removal of the traditional leather or rubber cylinder from the routine, and replacing it with a rolled dollar bill is also an excellent update and keeps the performer from having to explain the introduction of an "unusual" object into the routine. Likewise, the use of a finger ring in place of the traditional slice of a wine bottle cork is another great update. It is a LOT easier to simply use the ring on your finger than to explain why you have the slice of cork in play. Finally, the handling taught also eliminates another archaic prop from the routine...Traditionally a wand or pencil is used to show the cylinder empty but by using the dollar bill cylinder, this is unnecessary.

While the boxed set is relatively high priced for a beginner or hobbyist, the gaffs provided, plus the excellent handling and updated presentation taught by Jay in the videos make this an ideal way to learn to perform a true classic of coin magic. Everything needed is provided, with the exception of the bill (some assembly required, but not much), and the instructional videos are excellent. In my opinion, the value of what's in the box far outweighs the price.

Very well done, Jay!

Excellent instructions. Easy to adapt presentation. For example, I'm not tall or slim or handsome, so standing while performing and taking bows to ditch & retrieve coins not a good look for someone short, fat & ugly. Hence, I remain seated and ditch & retrieve coins via sleights. Eliminated the finger ring bit entirely. Works for me and the highly polished look of the coins is a real crowd pleaser.

This is a refreshing take on a classic trick and also opens it up to a wider audience. I suffer from hyperhidrosis, or excessively sweaty palms. While this makes me better with cards in some cases, coins have been out of my reach my entire 22 years of doing magic. This set has opened the doors for me to finally do a trick that had been beyond me for far too long. The gimmicks are a huge improvement from the originals. Yes there is a small discrepancy between 3 and 4 but in 100 performances already no layperson has noticed.

Been playing with this for a couple of weeks now and absolutely love it! I’ve never been a fan of the original Ramsey props and this solves my issue. Everything is natural looking and non magic proppy. ( made up word ).

The handling looks like real magic and every move is well thought out. The props are top notch and made to last.

I can’t wait to add this to the close up section of my cruise ship show. I’m a pretty good judge of what plays well and know this will be a winner!

This routine is absolutely sensational. High marks to Joshua for his unique approach to this classic. I have a number of versions of this effect made by some of the finest coin makers. I have used Ramsay's routine as well as John Carney's. This routine is beautiful and easy to accomplish using the materials given. Best part is that you can use all of it or some of it. Worth every penny.

Overall I really like the thinking behind this routine, in my mind or opinion this is a very excellant piece of magic. I especically like the whole idea of using three coins instead of four. I have Geoff Latta's book the long goodbye and I also tried John Carney's routine streamlined cylinder and coins. In the Latta book a very nice routine is described, but I was never sure how I would obtain the nessesary props. I also emailed, Todd Lassen a few times to see about getting the props made; however I never heard back from him. So, I'm very grateful that this routine was shared. I believe that there are ingenius thoughts that went into the routine that I've never seen before. I was fooled by the shot glass of liquor and very surprised by it, thank you I like to be fooled. A very wonderful routine!

I will actually call this a 4.5-star review, per explanation below.
Joshua Jay is a SUPERB teacher of his tricks! He gives you reasons, results, methods, and ideas to build from. His video presentations explaining his routines are always enjoyable and precisely informative, and Cylinder & Coins is no different. Great job!
The props included are of exceptional quality (except the shot glass, which I would describe as good enough). Although much of the expense is understandably for the sharing of these outstanding methods, representing much work over years by Joshua, you'll know with this purchase that you have bought some serious props. Three things are omitted--one of these is currency, one is essential for the instructed coin vanish (and it's a common item you probably already have), and one is an optional prop for which Vanishing Inc Magic remarkably included a 3D Printer instruction file--that makes this a VERY comprehensive and thoughtful package.
I haven't done much coin work, so I will be practicing with the VERY HIGH QUALITY coin set provided. The video instructions from Joshua make this look achievable for even me (someone who lacks exceptional manual dexterity).
All of that sounds like a 5-star review, and so it would be. The half-star would be deducted for this reason: Angles are limited for performing this trick. Vanishing Inc Magic makes no claims to the contrary, of course, so it's not a let-down; it's just a limitation. Not only are side-to-side angles limited, but vertical angles are also limited. That means the height of your table will matter. This is made obvious in the explanation video, although it is not mentioned. You can see what should not be seen, because the camera is higher (relative to the table) than the true illusion allows.

I am very pleased with my purchase. The gaffs are great; they can be used for other routines! The instructions are simple and the routine itself is not knuckle busting; the gaffs pretty much do the hard work, you just have to know how to hold them. This is a definite must have for a parlor trick involving coins.

This is a great kit! It's nice to see the classics like this revisited, and Joshua's thoughts and revisions are worth considering, even if you don't plan to implement them. The details are all nicely covered and you’re given a lot to work with, should you plan to customize the routine to better fit your performance style. Highly recommended, especially for all you get with this!

The routine itself is a 5 out of 5. Cylinder and Coins is fantastic and it's one of my favorite coin effects. Josh closed his lecture with it about 10 years ago and it blew my mind.

You do receive everything you need, however it does not come ready to go as stated in the description; at least not Josh's routine. You will need to do a bit of arts and crafts with a few dollar bills along with some included, and not included, material. Also, according to the instructional video and the Q&A section, you are told one of the two included shot glasses will be full and ready to go. Again, no. Both of mine were empty. I happened to have some of the needed material on hand, so no big deal.

Regarding the stack of coins: The top removable coin has an audible rattle. Not really a big deal. Ambient sound will solve this, and it's not like you're going to be vigorously shaking this coin around for your spectators. Another thing about this coin is that due to the nature of its construction, there is a recess around the circumference giving it somewhat of a sharp edge. This means it's a bit awkward tying to lift it off the stack; it tends to get caught/stuck when lifting it off the stack no matter your finger placement or how gentle you are. Hopefully this edge will ware down over time?

Lastly: My coin stack fell apart when taking it out of the packaging. I don't mean the top removeable coin; I mean the actual Ramsay coin stack. This is not as bad as it sounds as the stack is held together by a readily available material (not included). So it's kind of "supposed" to come apart in a sense. I only bring it up because having your brand new prop fall apart is a discerning image after spending a good amount of money on it.

The Triad coin is great. It's much deeper and handles better than the original Triad.

I'm torn on this product overall. As I said, I absolutely LOVE this routine, but all of those little things added up after spending $175 is a bit annoying. The description made it very clear that it's "ready to go". On the other hand, in order to collect all the gimmicks and props for the original Ramsay routine, you're going to be several hundred dollars in the hole. So there's a lot of pros and cons here. Maybe the set I received is a fluke. Maybe other buyers received a full shot glass, a silent coin, and a solid stack. At the end of the day, you'll be able to do Josh's beautiful routine after purchasing this set.

  • Victor asks: what is the skill level required?

    • 1. Vanishing Inc. Magic responds: If you've never used coins before, we'd say it's intermediate, but if you have any experience with coins, it's not that difficult at all.
  • Robert asks: On a scale of 1-5, 5 being hardest to execute, how difficult is the routine?

    • 1. Vanishing Inc. Magic responds: If you've never used coins before, we'd say a 2.5, but if you have any experience with coins, it's not that difficult at all.
  • Todd asks: I have the same question. Why does he vanish 3 coins but the stack has 4? Shouldn't the stack match? Could this be fixed?

    • 1. Vanishing Inc. Magic responds: There is a reason for the larger stack that you'll learn on the download but it is not an issue in the real world.
  • Joshua asks: If I already have the props/gaffs for the Cylinder and Coins, is it possible just to buy Joshua's routine? With the props included in this, is there anything different from the classic that would benefit me to buy this version?

    • 1. Vanishing Inc. Magic responds: The routine is only available with the set. There are some new things added that do make it worth it if you already have the old props
  • Fred asks: Is this appropriate for a 13 year old?

    • 1. Vanishing Inc. Magic responds: Besides ending with drinking a shot of whisky, yes!
    • 2. Lewis answers: Probably not, depending on his/her skill level
  • John asks: I too noticed the four coins instantly. Hey, I'm a magician. Does the audience notice that? I'm sure that some will.

    • 1. Vanishing Inc. Magic responds: Josh has been performing this for years, and that's never been a problem. He's even done so on live TV
  • Louis asks: Do i get the whiskey with the props lol

    • 1. Vanishing Inc. Magic responds: You get a fake whisky :)
  • Alexander asks: Is it also be possible to perform with Euro bills as I‘m within the EU and we don‘t use dollar bills, or is the bill part of some gimmick?

    • 1. Nick answers: The main description under ‘props’ states you can convert ANY bill…so I’m going to guess yes.

  • Richard asks: What is the skill level? I've never used coins before. I love the routine but afraid it may be above my skill level?

    • 1. Vanishing Inc. Magic responds: It's not too hard, but if you're unfamiliar with coins, it will take some practice
  • Michael asks: I'm very interested in that shot glass...is there any talk of selling the shot glass separately in the future?

    • 1. Vanishing Inc. Magic responds: Not at this time

  • Patrice asks: Is it possible to buy the glass of whisky separately ?

    • 1. Vanishing Inc. Magic responds: At this time, it's only available with the set
  • Filip asks: I’ve seen some answer as well. But just to be sure. I guess it’s not meant for real closeup and you do need something to get behind a table? And as far as I know not good for reappeared audiences? So no table hoping or?

    • 1. Vanishing Inc. Magic responds: You cannot do this table hopping as many of the elements need to be pre-set.
  • Justin asks: how hard would it be to replace the bill with one from another country?

    • 1. Vanishing Inc. Magic responds: Very easy!
  • Craig asks: Does the shot glass come pre filled, or can I put my own beverage in it?

    • 1. Vanishing Inc. Magic responds: Yes but you also get one that is empty to fill it yourself.
  • Shane asks: The category the effect is under is parlor/stage. Could this be done close-up, with say a distance of two or three feet from the spectators?

    • 1. Vanishing Inc. Magic responds: You can do this in a formal close-up show.
  • Kyle asks: Will the Morgan Triad set ever be sold separately?

    • 1. Vanishing Inc. Magic responds: Not at this time.
  • John asks: What is the size of the ring? Or are there size options I did not see?

    • 1. Vanishing Inc. Magic responds: I believe it's a size 10. The ring size is specific to the stack of coins. Switching out a larger ring would not work.
  • Sam asks: I use half dollars in my magic a lot will the set be made in these at some point?

    • 1. Vanishing Inc. Magic responds: We are not sure at this time. Everything was designed around the Dollar sized coins for this set.
  • Daniel asks: Instead of Replicate morgan coins, can I use my Real Morgan gaffed coins that I have?

    • 1. Vanishing Inc. Magic responds: If you have a matching stack, sure!
  • Peter asks: Two questions: 1. Are there any clothing requirements? 2. Is wearing a watch integral to the performance?

    • 1. Vanishing Inc. Magic responds: No clothing requirements except for wearing a watching.
  • Connor asks: Are the coins made in China/PRC?

    • 1. Vanishing Inc. Magic responds: The coins are made by our manufacture
  • Brian asks: Can you use scottish money as its this polycarbonate stuff

    • 1. Oliver answers: The description states you can convert ANY bill

  • Andrew asks: So 3 coins vanish, and appear in the bill, on top of a 4th coin under the ring??… Where did the 4th coin come from??

  • Axel asks: is it possible to age the coins with bleach or something else?

    • 1. Vanishing Inc. Magic responds: You can do that at your own risk but over time, the oils from your hands will age the coins.
  • Derek asks: Is it possible to see a presentation without background music, please? The reason I ask is that I bought Triad Coins and, without giving anything away, found there were very strong audible clues as to something not being right ('talking'). I'd really like to understand the 'sound quality' of the (non-stack) coins. If you could comment on this, that would be great. Also - is there any need to 'treat' with teflon etc. etc. ? Thank you

    • 1. Vanishing Inc. Magic responds: Josh always performs this routine to music. However, this is due to a performance choice, not because of the sound. You'll find after playing with the coins for a bit, the sound will subdue.
  • Evan asks: Josh mentions switching straight coins in for the gaffed coins, but only the gaffs are supplied. Any chance you'll make matching coins available?

    • 1. Vanishing Inc. Magic responds: We do not have any plans now, but you can always use ordinary dollar coins. Handing them out is not needed though
  • Vince asks: It seems unrealistic that rolling the bill into a cylinder would allow the bill to remain as such before the next step which I know. Trying to keep a bill in a cylinder is not possible as it always uncurls itself.

    • 1. Vanishing Inc. Magic responds: This is explained in the tutorial and why Josh did it this way.
  • Sascha asks: Firstly congratulations on reviving this beautiful classic of magic I wanted to check as to what material the coins was made from. I understand that these aren't silver. I ask this to know if the coin would age over time, and lose its luster or if it will turn yellow such as the brass replicas which come out of china.

    • 1. Connor answers: These coins are definintely replicas out of China. Either brass, aluminum, or stainless steel (my guess because they are non-magnetic). They can be aged with a patina or aging paint.
Post an answer to this question
  • William asks: Will, you ever release matching replica non gaft coins that match the set?

    • 1. Vanishing Inc. Magic responds: Not at the moment.
  • david asks: How are the triad coins improved? I never used my triad coins because I was not confident in the construction of the gimmick.

    • 1. Vanishing Inc. Magic responds: The gimmick of the Triad coins are still the same and the handling of the coins are the same. The only improvement is that it is used in the Cylinder and Coins routine.
  • Reginald asks: Can extra shot glasses be purchased?

    • 1. Vanishing Inc. Magic responds: Not at this time
  • Chadwick asks: I’ve read this is only available with a size 10 ring. Is there any plan to release a larger, say size 12, size?

    • 1. Vanishing Inc. Magic responds: The reason why the ring is that size is so that it will fit with the stack gimmick. Any larger and it and will not work.
  • Michael asks: Any chance that you're going to sell the Morgan Dollar Triad Coins separately? Though I'm truly blown away by Josh's amazing and updated Cylinder-and-Coins routine, I'm more interested in performing the Triad Coins effect on stage; therefore, I'm really looking for coins that are larger than half Dollar coins. Will this becomes reality one fine day? :)

    • 1. Vanishing Inc. Magic responds: At this time, they are only available in the set.
  • D.L. asks: I'm clearly not ready for this routine, but having inherited 2 generations of silver dollars, I've never seen Morgans that are so shiny and new looking. Is this an issue?

    • 1. Vanishing Inc. Magic responds: Unfortunately, this is the way that the coins are made. The good thing is that you don't have to use any other coins because you're provided with all of the props.
  • Alessandro asks: Are these the same coins as Josh's Triad Coins? And also: Are we able to choose ring size on checkout?

    • 1. Vanishing Inc. Magic responds: They are the same coins but made in dollar size for this set! Ring size is not able to be selected
  • David asks: A question about the triad coins. I've purchased this and am wondering if adding teflon tape would work for these coins? When I do a french drop its the only really noisy part. I wanted to know if adding teflon tape would take the noise down and also if it would work for this set with out making everything "stick out" too much. I see I can get a pack of teflon tape for dollar size coins but dont want to waste $10 if it wont work. Thanks!

    • 1. Vanishing Inc. Magic responds: You could use the tape. It will cause any coin/shell not to aline as well though. In Joshes routine, I do not believe there is any requirement for a French drop though so you shouldn't need it!
  • Neal asks: This is a fabulous effect, and a terrific looking version! What would you imagine being the maximum audience size without the aid of video support?

    • 1. Vanishing Inc. Magic responds: Probably 40-50 people.
  • Morris asks: are the finger rings supposed to come with the kit?

    • 1. Vanishing Inc. Magic responds: Indeed they are. If yours are missing, please email our Support Wizards on magic@vanishingincmagic.com and they'll take care of you.
  • Nathan asks: What are the replica Morgan coins made out of? Are they brass with silver plating copper with silver plating or are they white copper/cupranickel?

Post an answer to this question
    • Wilder asks: Is there a huge difference between the Triad Coins that come with this effect and the triad coins sold separately? I mainly ask because of the price of both items.

      • 1. Vanishing Inc. Magic responds: Yes, they are replica Morgan silver dollars, so are much larger. The price difference is because you get a LOT more with this aside from the Triad Coins.
    • Allen asks: What if you dont wear a watch, is there another way taught to vanish the coins or any ideas given for those who dont wear watches?

      • 1. Vanishing Inc. Magic responds: You can use any other coin vanish for that point in the routine but the only one taught is the one shown.
