A practical, hard-hitting effect that gives every audience a personalized experience they’ll never forget.

With “Name Dropper” by John Graham, you not only perfectly divine a chosen card, but also a freely thought-of person’s name. Everything is done in a fair and impossible way that will leave them stunned.

"It's a miracle. You won't be able to follow this with anything else. It's that powerful." Asi Wind

A small packet of red cards with strange black markings on the back is placed to the side under the card box as a prediction (which stays in full view the whole time). Then, you have them select a card from a blue deck while they think of a person that means a lot to them.

As soon as they say this person’s name, you instantly know what card they chose. You can even prove you predicted it well in advance.

As the final jaw-dropping kicker, the red cards from earlier are revealed to have letters on the back. Not just any letters though. One by one, you lay them out to spell the name of the person they were thinking of.

“Name Dropper” is John Graham’s exceptional, streamlined handling of Paul Harris’s iconic “Deep Astonishment”. It is being released with full permission from Paul, who praises John for the work he’s done to make this effect more commercial for the walkaround professional or hobbyist performer.

  • Easy to do
  • No sleight of hand
  • No magnets
  • No gimmicked wallet
  • No hiding extra cards in the final display
  • No palming
  • No pre-show
  • Not limited to four-letter words

“John Graham’s new release 'Name Dropper' is a killer trick that packs a punch." Paul Gertner

This is the first time that “Name Dropper” has ever been available as a complete, ready-to-go package. You’ll get the custom deck of cards, as well as the beautiful leather packet wallet that holds your prediction.

In addition to the props, John has also put together a nearly one-hour explanation video in which he explains every detail you need to start performing right away. He is even joined by his good friend Asi Wind for a special bonus section where the talented duo discusses the subtle nuances needed that enable you to get the most out of every performance.

"Name Dropper" Full Performance

“Name Dropper” is suitable for magicians of all skill levels. The only real “move” is very simple and happens invisibly on a designed off-beat. John has even developed a sneaky crib that you can leave out in the open so you don’t need to memorize anything to start performing.

John isn’t kidding. You will carry this at every gig. Elegant and clean and absolutely baffling.

I have John’s Stage by Stage book that features this effect, however I never took the time to construct it. Let me just say that they have manufactured this product to the highest standard. I can’t recommend this trick enough. I just recently had a corporate and performed Name Dropper for the first time. Went over so well they booked me for 3 trade shows they’re having this year. If you want to leave an impression and get booked and rebooked with clients, don’t waste any time and pick this up.

I've lost count of the number of times that I've bought what looked like a mind-blowing trick only to be disappointed by some aspect of the effect that didn't quite work the way it seemed to in the video. Some move that's too hard, or some angle that doesn't look right, or some equivoque that wasn't evident. This trick has none of those problems. It is absolutely as advertised: easy to do, no equivoque (well, Rumpelstiltskin would be problematic, but still doable if you really wanted to) and every bit as mind-blowing IRL as in the video. It's an absolutely brilliant design. Five stars.

I had read this piece in Stage by Stage (page 9) and decided to pick up the physical copy. Nothing too groundbreaking from the original. While it's a strong piece of magic, there are a few drawbacks such as memorization of collated letters and some odd handling of card switching. $35 for a pre-marked deck won't make or break you but I wish there was a little more.

Have a question about this product? It's possible others do too. Ask here and other Vanishing Inc. Magic customers will be able to respond with assistance! Alternatively, email us and we can help too.

  • Ron asks: I presume it would not work if a spectator chooses a really obscure name (like Rumpelstiltskin, say). So my question is: how much leeway is there in the choice of name? Is it necessary to force a common name?

    • 1. Anthony answers: Not at all necessary to force a common name. John goes over how to handle long names

  • Max asks: Are there any differences between this release and what's printed in "Stage By Stage"?

    • 1. Fredrick answers: It is the same as in the book. It’s intended for those who don’t read or won’t spend a little more for the book. I really enjoyed the book and had a lot of admiration for John however this feels like a money grab
    • 2. Michael answers: I haven't purchased this product, but from the performance it looks exactly like what's in the book.
    • 3. Gary answers: It is the\ same. In cases like this I wish that the dealer would put that in the ad copy. Someone might want the book instead. Could say "as in his book Stage by Stage"

  • Brandon asks: Hi can we see a full performance of the effect please

    • 1. Max answers: There's a full performance video at the bottom of this page.

  • Ofir asks: Im guessing this is an english only effect since you receive a "custom deck ready to go". Is that correct?

    • 1. Anthony answers: It requires the name to be spelled in the Latin alphabet, otherwise, it is any language. You will also learn how to make it yourself if needed

  • Steve asks: I have an absolutely awful memory... a bad thing for a mentalist for sure. So I am just wondering how much there is to remember? cheers Steve

    • 1. Vanishing Inc. Magic responds: There is a full stack to remember but there is a version with a crib.
  • Dexter Yin asks: What are the difference between Name Dropper and Deep Astonishment?

    • 1. Gordon answers: One is a moment of wonder, the other is a convoluted card trick filled with unfunny gags to cover the action.
    • 2. Deryck answers: Which is which?
