Notion of Motion - magic
Notion of Motion Notion of Motion Notion of Motion Notion of Motion Notion of Motion Notion of Motion

This groundbreaking creation from Angelo Carbone allows you to make any freely-named card rise from a deck on your command. “Notion of the Motion” is a miracle-level effect that leaves people convinced they've witnessed real magic—even seasoned magicians. After being an underground secret that was difficult to find for many years, you can now get "Notion of Motion" from Vanishing Inc. at it's most affordable price ever!

"... a bloody miracle. Angelo sat on the floor of a hotel room in bright sunlight two feet from my face and - several times in a row - made any card called for rise. I didn't have a clue." Teller

"It's perfect and impossible in effect and hugely impressive in method. Angelo is a quiet genius, and anything from him is going to be astonishing and direct." Derren Brown

"This is the best rising card trick I have ever seen. I have no idea how you did it." Paul Harris

Despite being more than a century and a half old, the rising card continues to fascinate audiences of all kinds. It thrives in nearly any situation because it’s visual, magical, and has no language barriers.

While countless magicians have added their touches to the plot, nobody has revolutionized it quite like Angelo Carbone. There is a reason our very own Joshua Jay used it as the bonus “Seventh Impossible Thing” after every sold out performance of his smash-hit show Six Impossible Things.

The beauty of “Notion of Motion” is how direct, fair, and amazing it is. They name a card and you make it rise on your command. You will be blown away once you see how utterly brilliant the method is.

  • No forces
  • No equivoque
  • No magnets
  • No threads
  • No electronics

For years, “Notion of Motion” was only available to a select group of magicians. Each one was extremely time-consuming to make and sold for $100s. But, after working closely with Angelo, we’ve been able to produce larger quantities without sacrificing any quality. Each “Notion of Motion” is still handmade from a red Bicycle Mandolin deck to Angelo’s exact specifications.

And the best part? We didn't just reproduce the gimmick. We worked with Angelo to improve it. It now features an extra device which makes this amazing routine even more practical than ever. It's also more affordable too!

Each “Notion of Motion” comes with a detailed tutorial featuring Angelo’s original handlings, as well as the modified easier handling that Josh has developed over years of performing it.

"The Hooker Card Rise requires a truck to transport. Angelo's Notion of Motion travels in your shirt pocket. I can't comment on Angelo's method as I have no idea how it works. Congratulations on creating a true miracle." Mike Caveney

"Brilliantly inexplicable until you learn the method. Inexplicably brilliant when you do." Guy Hollingworth

"If I had to imagine the perfect rising card, it would look exactly like Carbone's creation." Asi Wind

"A masterpiece of magical invention. The method is as brilliant as the effect. More amazing, still, is that this is just one of Angelo's remarkable creations. He is, without a doubt, one of magic's true innovators." R. Paul Wilson

"It looks like you are doing the Hooker Card Rise described, but never disclosed, on page 424 in Greater Magic. You have created and combined some very diabolical secrets. I could not imagine the real methods. You fooled me at every moment with this astounding miracle. Congratulations!" Tim Conover

"Notion of Motion" FAQ

Is it really a free choice of any card? Yes!

Are then any forces or equivoque used?
Nope. It really can be any card that they want. No influence of any kind.

Is the deck examinable?
While you can't hand them the deck, Angelo's clever handling allows you to freely show the front and back of the deck before and after the effect.

What is the difficulty level?
There are multiple versions taught for all skill levels. Joshua Jay's handling is definitely the simplest and the best entry point. Angelo's preferred handling is deeply fooling and will stump even magicians who think they have an idea of the method. This one will take some practice, but it's well worth it. It's important to note that all of the variations require decent eyesight. As a reference point, if you can read the markings on a marked deck, your eyesight should be good enough to perform this.

I would have never figured it out! The one hand is a killer but need a lot of practice. VIM is doing a great job by bringing this underground trick. 5*

I just received this and I gotta say this is so well made. I cannot believe how Angelo was able to come up with this method in the first place, genius level thinking honestly. Now the effect is truly incredible but you have to put in some work to make it look as good as Angelo does. The one handed version will require you to practice a lot. But I also love Josh's version with the silk that made the method easier, and I feel more theatrical. This is one of the best releases of the year.

Angelo Carbone’s Notion of Motion takes the classic rising card effect to new heights, offering a clean and customizable experience where any named card can rise from the deck. It’s a jaw-dropping piece of magic that feels impossible to both laypeople and magicians.

What really sets this effect apart is Joshua Jay’s thoughtful variation, which simplifies the handling without compromising the impact. Jay’s adaptation streamlines the setup and execution, making the effect far more accessible for magicians who might shy away from technically demanding routines. By easing the difficulty level, Jay ensures that performers can focus on the presentation and drama of the effect, rather than worrying about perfecting challenging sleights.

The method is ingenious, with the gimmick doing most of the heavy lifting. Carbone and Jay’s collaboration ensures that the effect is not only practical but also incredibly versatile. Whether you’re performing in close-up settings, parlor shows, or casual environments, Notion of Motion adapts beautifully.

The instructions are clear and detailed, covering both the original handling and Jay’s streamlined approach. With a bit of practice, the rising card looks like pure magic, with no apparent manipulation. If you’re looking for a rising card effect that’s both fooling and performer-friendly, Notion of Motion is a fantastic choice. This is a perfect example of innovation and accessibility working hand in hand.

This effect by Carbone seems to have attained legendary status (I write as an amateur, not a professional). Most everything written here is true and you MUST see the video before mucking around with this ingenious card deck + gadget. When you first open the box and observe the inner appearance of this deck it is unusual and hard to understand at first. There is an urge to examine it physically before watching the instructionasl video. Don't do this. Familiarity will lead to appreciation for the ingenuity of the design. One-handed presentation is not easy and requires substantial practice. As good as this is, and it is excellent, it can be improved by altering the dimensions of the gadget in a way that cannot be revealed here. It appears to have been designed specifically for Carbone's technique.

A high quality rising card pack, ingeniously designed. The video instructions are thorough and well produced, with multiple handlings explained. As others have noted, this will take practice to be able to present as it deserves. That being said, some of the handlings are easier than others and still produce great results.

As a hobbyist for over 60 years, I have seen many ingenious effects. I am very happy to have ordered this as soon as it went on sale! Although it is worth more than the regular price by far! The method is genius! It will take practice to be done properly, as all great effects are, but it is well worth the work. There is a knack to make a few of the cards chosen rise, but nothing you can not over come. Practice and by all means watch the Tutorial, until you get all the small details! You will love this! Just practicing with it is fun. Angelo created a classic!

A superbly crafted effect. Strong nearly hourlong tutorial to include subtleties, alternative effects, and care of materials. And, a personal favorite, downloadable PDF written instructions accompany the effect (for those of us dinosaurs who LOVE printed paper as a storage medium)!

At the end of his "Six Impossible Things" show, Josh would invite individual specatators backstage for one final "impossible thing." This is the efffect he showed magicians. I still remember my utter bewilderment as my freely-named four of diamonds emerged eerily from the pack, then receded to safety at Josh's command. I had been hoping — praying — that this effect would be released. Last year's VI newsletter promised it this year, and sure enough, here it is!
Every aspect of this trick is amazing, from the brilliance of the conception to the craftsmanship and elegance of the construction. This is a total winner. I bought two, just to be sure.
Although the trick is ready to go out of the box — thankfully, no "arts and crafts" — it will take work to acquire a naturalness of handling. I'm still honing my own version, taking aspects of and suggestions from the many alternatives offered.
I also VERY MUCH appreciate that the directions for this trick are both on video and in PDF files. They are comprehensive and detailed.
In short this is a winner! A champion!

Its brilliant. Seriously, how does someone come up with this. The product is well made with no issues on my end.
Please watch the full tutorial. I highly suggest taking a few minutes prior to messing around with this and making all the recommended adjustments.
This is not an out of the box and start doing it type of effect. You will need to put the time in to make sure that the that your handling is sound, your movements are fluid, and that you are timely. This is to good of a trick to have it look like a mess because you didnt practice it enough.
I have an idea of how to utilize this as a rotation piece in my act. I particularly like Josh's handling.

I like to try to figure out the method before I buy a trick. In some cases I'm right, others not so much. This one I was right, mostly. This will take a little practice but not hard to do. It is a bit delicate and must be taken care of but it should last you a long time. Jay's handling is very nice as it allows you to get into the trick and clean up after very easily. I try not to do card tricks. It seems like every magician does them but I will definitely be doing this for sure. Looks like magic if done well.

Full disclosure: I don’t have this effect I. Hand yet. However the method in terms of magical thinking is mind blowing. I promise you your guesses are wrong. This effect is an insane visual but IMO it’s highest value is in that it can inspire us to completely rethink methods of effects that seem to have been fully explored. I am so impressed at this cutting edge solution to this old effect. Bravo.

A triumphant piece of magic design that would have easily justified a price tag of a few hundred dollars as it would previously command back when Angelo made each unit himself by hand. Having been so fooled by videos of Notion of Motion, I jumped straight to the instructional video after placing my order, half-bracing myself to be disappointed by a method I was worried would be wildly convoluted, fragile, temperamental, impractical for real-world performance, or situationally limited.

None of that ended up being true. Not only was I not disappointed, but my hopes were well exceeded. None of the ad copy is embellished or misleading. The deck of cards can be removed from its box and displayed back and front in a very fair way. The deck is placed back in the box. A card - ANY card - is then named with zero forcing or even a slight amount of equivoque involved. From there, with no fidgeting or fumbling or suspicious actions, that freely named card mysteriously rises out of the boxed deck up to half its length. It looks just as brilliant every single time, no matter what card is named.

Considering the high bar this clears from an effect perspective, Angelo's method has no right to be this practical, angle-friendly, elegant, and burnable. You can do this from pretty wide viewing angles from any distance and under any lighting conditions. When viewed from its proper viewing angles, there is NOTHING suspicious to see. A card is named. The card mysteriously rises out of the deck. It's that direct.

Notion of Motion is portable, versatile, immediately repeatable, and instantly resets. The clever thinking and precise design that has gone into this method is awe-inspiring; in other words, typical Angelo Carbone brilliance. You get beyond your money's worth with Notion of Motion, from the well-made apparatus to the thorough instructions with multiple handlings and variations presented.

If you like what you see, don't hesitate. Buy this. Now.

I’ve been waiting for the release of Notion of Motion for what feels like forever. Over the years, I’ve watched this effect again and again, and no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t figure it out. I’ve been dying to perform this ultimate rising card effect, and now it’s finally here. All I can say is this: it’s absolutely brilliant.

For anyone who picks this up, I can’t stress enough how important Angelo’s advice is: take your time. Practice until it’s perfect before you perform it. There’s no reward for being the first to post it on social media. Angelo set the bar when he first shared this masterpiece on YouTube more than a decade ago—after spending years perfecting it himself. Do this incredible effect justice by getting it right. Trust me, it’s worth it.

WOW!! I’m sure my deck will be here within 24-hours (VI has amazingly quick delivery) so I have only just absorbed the tutorial. This is an absolutely ingenious creation. It truly is as advertised: no strings, no magnets, no electronics, no equivocate, no forcing, any card! Absolutely beautiful to watch and I imagine it shall be addictive to perform.

I know it will take some practice to perform the one handed variation but anyone who handles cards regularly should have no problem with it at all. Joshua Jay’s version detracts nothing from the originator’s while adding a subtlety of “not physically touching the cards or case” which in my opinion actually adds to the presentation while making it a bit easier to perform. If you’re smart enough to add this to your repertoire, you’ll find your professional stock rise!

I rarely write reviews and I have seen and owned numerous rising card effects. So I was on the fence to purchase. Vanishing Inc. put it into the Black Friday Sale (which is ridiculous in itself) and so I jumped.
And man - this one hits the ball out of the park into another universe. It will take practice for sure (even the principle is devilishly easy and easy to understand). But the most important to me is that this combination of method and effect just kicks the mind to thinking how to use both in different ways and other premises. I hate making props and gimmicks but I will work with that principle A LOT because it looks so innocent and magical and can heighten any reveal to a wonderful experience.
Angelo is a real genius who explains in a very humble and intelligent manner the nuances and tweaks.
Thanks VInc. 🙏🏻 and thanks thanks Angelo for this miracle (no electronics, no charging - just magical powers)🫶

Community questions about Notion of Motion

Have a question about this product? It's possible others do too. Ask here and other Vanishing Inc. Magic customers will be able to respond with assistance! Alternatively, email us and we can help too.

  • Nicolas asks: Is ti possible de take out the rising card after its ascendance?

    • 1. Vanishing Inc. Magic responds: No
  • David asks: One reviewer said, "When viewed from its proper viewing angles, there is NOTHING suspicious to see". What are the "proper viewing angles"? I'm seeing it performed close up, but my most likely use case is in a parlor setting, with somewhat wider angles than close up. Also, a previous question clarified that the card could not be taken out of the deck after rising, yet the deck can apparently be shown after the trick. How does that work? Do you remove the entire deck with the half-risen card or push it back down, then remove the deck? (I'm assuming there is some sleight or switch, but it seemed odd that the risen card couldn't be removed but the deck shown, so thought I'd check)

    • 1. Michael answers: Proper viewing angles simply mean the vantage point from which you're meant to view the trick! It's definitely not a 360 view - a view from the back will expose the secret - but if you're holding the deck in your left hand for the rise, you're well covered from your left side and the front. Right side and rear are vulnerable. The angles are on the whole very forgiving. If you performed this head-on for an audience in a parlour or standup setting, you'd be absolutely fine. Without exposing anything re: your second question, the deck of cards is heavily gimmicked but can be displayed in some fair looking ways - namely a ribbon spread and thumb fan - that feel natural while also keeping the sneaky business concealed. That said, you can't fully separate the cards from each other; most of the cards are not able to be seen in their entirety. That's why you can't take the risen card all the way out. Simply push it back down, remove the deck, spread it across the table, and you're done.

  • Ricki asks: I read somewhere that poor eyesight would make this hard to perform. is that true?

    • 1. Michael answers: Depending on the nature of the poor eyesight, it could certainly pose an issue. If you can read a marked deck with minimal hesitation, it’s highly likely you’ll be able to do this too (not that this uses a marked deck, but it does require you to be able to see and interpret information in a tiny format).

  • Clive asks: Can this be perform surrounded?

    • 1. Vanishing Inc. Magic responds: No, but the angles are very good.
  • Oliver asks: Would fanning powder help to stop multiple cards rising? I have this amazing deck but don't want to do anything that might ruin it.

    • 1. Vanishing Inc. Magic responds: Squeezing the sides of the box will help that.
  • Gregory asks: Can it be performed with the left hand? To some it might seem like a silly question but one that I must ask as I have an injury to my right hand that inhibits fine motor skills in my fingers. Thanks!

    • 1. John answers: Nothing should stop it from being performed in your left hand.
