Vanishing Inc. Wonders is pleased to announce the release of Vinny DePonto’s “Icons,” an exclusive three-piece series honoring some of magic’s most alluring influences. It’s imperative for performers to innovate and rehearse in an environment that fosters creativity, and we hope that “Icons” provides inspiration and enjoyment for both you and anyone else who ventures through your creative space.

Vinny DePonto is a New York-based artist and performer, and “Icons” was a labor of love for him as he attempted to honor three of magic's greatest influences: Dai Vernon, René Lavand and Cardini.

The series is a mixed media collage comprised of found imagery from old magic periodicals and other disparate articles. Vinny spent countless hours refining each piece to ensure they encapsulated the distinct style and impact of each performer.

“Icons” is a “triptych,” art terminology for a series of three works meant to be enjoyed together. These three images have been meticulously crafted to match and contrast in various ways that make them perfect to hang in unison. As such, while they are available individually, they are best enjoyed through the special limited edition three-piece collector’s set.

Printed on high-quality archival paper, these works are suitable for deluxe framing. All three are signed and numbered by the artist, and will never be reprinted.

Icons - Cardini

Cardini (1895-1973) was born Richard Valentine Pitchford in the UK. While serving in World War I, Pitchford practiced sleight-of-hand while on duty in the freezing-cold trenches. As a result he learned to perform sleights with gloves on. After the war, he created the persona of “Cardini,” a tipsy gentleman who wore white gloves and top hat. His exquisite manipulations were balanced out with the hilarious “drunken” conceit that his character couldn’t figure out how or why the magic was happening around him. Cardini was a popular Vaudevillian act, and a stunning balance of virtuosic technique and satisfying character development.

Icons - Dai Vernon

Dai Vernon (1894-1992) is often referred to as the most influential magician of the second half of the twentieth century (Houdini being the most influential magician of the first half). Born in Canada, Vernon revolutionized the art of close-up magic, creating and refining tricks that have become the benchmark for all magicians. He was greatly influenced by the work of card cheats, and appropriated many sleight-of-hand moves from the card table, repurposing them for the performance of card magic.

Icons - René Lavand

René Lavand (1928-2015) was an Argentinian magician who fused narrative, poetry, and magic like nobody before (or since). His poetic style of magic was accentuated by the fact he used only one hand. After a childhood car accident caused him to lose use of one hand, Lavand innovated bold, intricate sleights using just his other hand such as one-handed shuffles, false transfers, palms, and more.
