You're just ditching the insert in the envelope, so if you had a different way to ditch the insert, you'd be fine.

Does the reveal have to be a playing card or can it be anything?

I do not own this, my reply is purely speculation. I believe you could create your own stack of cards and write on them anything you want such as names of cities, pieces of fruit, etc. The mentalist would then produce "Apple" as easily as "Ace of Spades"
