Gene Maze’s “Catch Me & Win” brilliantly combines a classic “Fast & Loose” (or Endless Chain) style effect with the infamous Three Shell Game and Three Card Monte scams to create a remarkably engaging gambling routine that makes sense and can be easily experienced in both a close-up magic environment and larger parlor magic scenario.

This amazing effect is so much more than a simple street con and has been in the working repertoire of professional magicians for more than three decades.

It’s core concept is beautifully simple. You introduce a stand with three pegs and then wrap a solid chain around all of them, explaining how when the chain is finally pulled, one peg will always catch. To win the game, all the spectator has to do is correctly guess which peg the chain will get caught on.

It seems like an easy task. Yet, no matter how hard they try, they’ll never choose the right peg—even when you make it easier by giving them hints or even removing a peg.

That’s because, with “Catch Me & Win”, you are always in total control of which peg the chain will catch on. It’s super easy to perform and allows you to choose who wins or loses at any point. This means you can present it in a variety of ways from you always winning to the spectator always winning or even a scenario where a child always gets one up on their parent.

Each set comes with everything you need to perform:

  • Gorgeous and sturdy PVC base and felt legs (4.75in x 6.5in x .75in)
  • Three steel pegs
  • A Gold Aluminum Chain
  • Instructional video

The included instructional video features Harry Lorayne teaching Gene’s original routine, as well as Meir Yedid showcasing his streamlined version that is direct, logical and removes the need for any difficult sleight of hand or memory work.

Love this bit of kit: I hadn't heard much of bunko games, endless chain scams etc before buying Catch Me and Win, so was pleasantly surprised by how easy it was to learn the basic moves.

I actually don't perform the routine as taught (hate the idea of a Magician always winning).

Instead I lose during a certain round, then share a prediction showing I knew when I was going to lose, and the decisions they made in the rounds before. It's a really fun way to turn this into a mentalism piece.

The prop — attributed to Gene Maze in the October 1991 issue of Apocalypse — enhances the three loop version of Fast and Loose (AKA, The Endless Loop) as described in Volume I of Ganson’s The Art of Close-Up Magic. As an amateur who can afford to indulge in method at the potential expense of effect, I have been a life-long devotee of all variations of Fast and Loose. Gambling effects that involve the audience “losing” are difficult to put across and demand special skills to keep the spectators engaged. There are three performances on the accompanying video — one each by Meir Yedid, Gene Maze, and Harry Lorayne. To tell the truth, I was not sold on the degree of audience involvement in any of them.

Be that as it may, if such con game, puzzle-like, topological problems pique your interest as they do mine, this is a successful implementation of a good idea. The chain is a bit light, though ideal in length. Mine broke shortly after receiving it, but to anyone familiar with jewelry chains — in my case, my wife — repair is a trivial matter.

If I may, I’d suggest fleshing out your mastery and understanding of the whole concept of the endless chain by supplementing this purchase with Whit Haydn’s Notes on Fast and Loose, available here on Vanishing Inc as of this writing for the low, low price of $26.60, on sale from $45.

  • Bruce asks: Can the peg board be presented vertically, mounted on a wall, or stand, enabling more of a parlor presentation? Or during the routine are there configurations of the chain that will not "hang" on the pegs properly, and simply drop to the floor?

    • 1. Vanishing Inc. Magic responds: It will make "the throw" considerably more difficult if you attempt it vertically, but 45 degrees would work for a parlor presentation.
  • Yonatan asks: Level of difficulty? Beginers?

    • 1. Gary answers: Pretty easy if you know Endless chain it's all in the performance!

  • Kevin asks: I repeat Bruce's question in the hopes one of the creators will answer"Can the peg board be presented vertically, mounted on a wall, or stand, enabling more of a parlor presentation? Or during the routine are there configurations of the chain that will not "hang" on the pegs properly, and simply drop to the floor?" I would buy it in a second if I thought I could use it in a parlour presentation. would it work on an angled stand Like lets say 45 degrees?)

    • 1. Vanishing Inc. Magic responds: Just like Fast And Loose, it will not "fall" until the last pin is removed, just like the last finger in Fast and Loose. It will work fine angled at 45 degrees for a parlor presentation.
  • David asks: How long is the chain that is included with the purchase of Catch Me & Win?

    • 1. Vanishing Inc. Magic responds: It is around 20-21 inches. Gene Maze believed in using as short a chain as you can.
  • Hiroyuki asks: About when is this available?

    • 1. Vanishing Inc. Magic responds: We're getting them in today (July 8th)!
  • Vladimir asks: What is the thickness of the chain link?

    • 1. David answers: I don't have a way to measure it, but it is pretty solid.
