Guy Hollingworth Book Release Event in NYC: A Resounding Success

To celebrate the upcoming release of More Drawing Room Deceptions, Guy Hollingworth has embarked on a series of release events. We had the great pleasure of hosting the first of these here in New York City.

To a sold-out audience of magicians who had flown in from as far as Panama (!) Guy treated the attendees to a deep-dive workshop of highlights from the book, and each person then walked away with an advanced copy of More Drawing Room Deceptions.

During the first hour, I interviewed Guy about his approach to magic, how we came to stage magic fairly late in his career, and what he looks for in a quality magic effect. An audience question about work-life balance (Guy is a Barrister in London) allowed him to explore how he splits his time between his many interests.

He performed his newest version of his seminal “Reformation,” this time restoring the card in the participant’s hands. He performed and explained “Schroedinger’s Card,” Guy’s take on The General Card, as well as versions of Cards to Pocket and Cups and Balls. He also shared a devious gimmick that enables sequences with cards that would not be possible without it.

It was such a joy for me, personally, to watch Guy flourish in this environment. I remember as a teenager, when Drawing Room Deceptions came out, that it was a sea-change moment. The book extolled the pleasures of performing difficult sleight-of-hand, and Guy’s material exemplified this. His emphasis on a stand-up approach to card magic helped usher in a whole new style for my generation. Watching the latest evolution of Guy’s magic was a joy. He’s in top form, and this book is a worthy successor to the original.
