From Joshua Jay’s Six Impossible Things to your home!
Joshua Jay’s off-broadway show Six Impossible Things was one of the most unique magic shows ever made. Like an immersive escape room combined with a magic show, guests would navigate through a labyrinth of rooms as impossible magic tricks happened inches from their face.
At the end of each show, guests were welcomed into a secret space to see their seventh and final impossible thing. To ensure this was an intimate and unforgettable experience, they would be separated into very small groups. While the others waited, they would be invited to test their luck at an array of artisan puzzles.
Two of these puzzles were the “Button Bank Secret Opening Box” and “Slide Bank Secret Opening Box”. These gorgeous, handmade secret lock boxes and secret opening boxes were inspired by antique Chinese treasure boxes. Unlike Japanese Puzzle Boxes (or Yosegi Puzzle Boxes), which rely on a large amount of sequential steps, these wooden puzzle boxes challenge you to think creatively.
Each one of these puzzle boxes has a unique solution that is simple in theory. Yet, what you’ll quickly learn is that simple does not mean obvious or easy. It’s the type of puzzle that’s bound to put a smile on your face (or maybe cause you let out a few swears) once you see the solution. Guest loved solving these puzzles and then using this brainteaser to challenge friends and family.
While both puzzle boxes offer their own distinct challenge, the “Secret Button Box” is a tricky puzzle for adults and kids that enjoy puzzles, while the “Secret Slide Box” is a slightly easier puzzle for newer puzzlers.
Constructed of gorgeous dark wood, these puzzles make for a great display piece. The slot on the side can also be used to insert money. You can also put smaller valuables inside once you get it open, making these the perfect secret lock boxes for gifts. Get them for yourself or as a unique gift for friends and family.
