The Shift - magic
The Shift The Shift The Shift The Shift The Shift

Ben Earl (author of one of our most praised books, Less is More) is back with an entirely new book that is an equal mix of new effects and practical magic theory. Along with three full routines, and two new sleights, Ben teaches a series of "practice drills" that he uses to make his sleights both effortless and deceptive. You'll learn:

Spinner: a transposition of two folded and signed playing cards; one held by the spectator and one held at the performer's fingertips. Those who have previously studied Ben's two-card transposition work, will quickly discover that this is one of his most deceptive card transpositions.

Just a Second: Ben's handling of the classic Stop Trick, where the cards are fully shuffled, and the participant gets to stop anywhere they like, yet somehow always find their selection.

Out of Oil: an Out of this World version, where the performer does not touch the deck during or after the participant starts dealing. As with all of Ben's work, the handling is direct and deceptive.

Overhand DPS: Ben's handling of the Diagonal Palm Shift, built into a fair-looking overhand shuffle.

Combination Shuffle: a clever false shuffle, that is both innocent and deceptive.

A New Angle: Ben teaches a small adjustment to how you hold a deck of cards that will improve many of the sleights you execute.

The Art of Practice: at The Retreat Costa Rica, Ben unveiled a number of training drills involving a rubber ball, to help break the tension from your sleights. He teaches all of the drills in full detail here.

Influence and Deception: an essay that discusses deception and its relationship to magic.

Full color, hardback. 110 pages.

As a huge fan of Ben Earl's work, The Shift did not disappoint at all. I consider any book I purchase to be a great success if I get at least 1 thing from it - in this case, I got 4.

I'll quickly overview each section, starting with tricks:
-Spinner: an awesome and unique handling of a 2 card transposition, very practical / within reach for any intermediate card magician
-Just a Second: a great stop trick, but just beware that it's a pretty advanced handling, so if you don't have a solid second deal this one probably isn't for you
-Out of Oil: an absolutely brilliant take on out of this world that requires knowledge of a cull & a faro shuffle. The psychological subtleties here are amazing and I will definitely be performing this trick

Next, the techniques section:
-Overhand DPS: an easier and much more natural way of doing a DPS that is within reach for any card magician. This is a perfect example of Ben's thinking when he designs sleights
-Combination False Shuffle: an awesome false shuffle that's also pretty easy to do, but extremely psychologically deceptive - I will be using this as well!

Theory section:
-A new angle: a simple, yet revolutionary technique in how to better hold a deck of cards in a way that is pretty game-changing - this alone was worth the price of the book for me!
-The art of practice: Ben shares some tips about his practice techniques and I find these make practicing a lot more fun, will be using this as well
-Deception essays: interesting theory on deception and influence that is a fascinating read

Overall: As a working magician, I will certainly be using Out of Oil, the Combination False Shuffle, A New Angle, and Ben's practice techniques. The book is small, but extremely well illustrated and looks beautiful on your shelf or coffee table. The pictures and explanations are clear and I think the "New Angle" alone is worth the price tag! Can't wait for volume 2 - this book is a must for any intermediate or above card magician who enjoys psychological subtleties in their card magic / impactful tricks.

The information in it is good but I think it is pretty expensive for what you get in return. For that prize there are better books and you get much more. Its definitely overprize and overrated I think 25 or 30 maximum would be a fair prize
