Rune's World - magic
Rune's World Rune's World

Rune's World is a departure from any magic book you’ve read. Part instruction, part theory, part graphic novel, this new volume by Joshua Jay will challenge you to think in new ways, about new possibilities with your magic.

Rune Klan is the most famous magician you’ve never heard of.

An extremist in nearly every way, Rune is a walking contradiction: among magicians he has gained an international reputation as a guru of coins. Yet Rune has achieved celebrity status in his native Denmark exclusively for stand-up comedy magic.

Rune Klan is the rarest kind of magician: he is an artist working without restrictions and with little compromise. His only concern is the end result. This is the thematic element that connects Rune’s boisterous stage magic with his refined close-up. Whether his objective is to transfer a coin stack from hand to hand (Rune goes through the cracks between each finger) or how to tear and restore a porno magazine (Rune tears a bikini-clad girl’s picture to pieces, removes a real bra from the packet, and restores the pages to show the same girl nude), all of Rune’s effects have been streamlined with the effect in mind. His effects range from standard to bizarre to illegal, but the effect is always paramount to the method. Every trick has Rune’s stamp on it.

Rune’s World explores both the close-up and parlor magic that makes Mr. Klan such a dynamic force. Part magic book and part graphic novel, this is an innovative 180-page collection unlike any other in both form and content.

Rune's World comes with a FREE companion download (subtitled performances, interviews in English, and some tricks performed and explained that are NOT in the book). This is a huge value.

Adult Themes. Recommended for ages 18 and over.

Customer reviews for Rune's World

So great to see this. Rune is very entertaining I could watch him all day. He definitely is a top notch entertainer and anyone one serious in comedy Magic can definitely learn a thing or two from him

Rune Klan's klink is the reason I fell in love with coin magic. If you come here expecting a typical magic book, this is far from it. It's a very fun read and there's even the comic section which just makes this book very easy and entertaining to read.

Completely unclothed (not literally). Rune lets it all hang out and makes so much sense. Love the self-effacing spirit of his disclosure of his inspirations, his love of spontaneity, and his ability to laugh at himself even if no one else is laughing. This is life giving and refreshing.

I absolutely love rune's stuff, normally before I purchase something I'll try to do a little research on the product but with this I knew I wouldn't have to, and I was right not to, it's a fantastic book that I feel every magician needs to own his coin stuff is definitely stuff you will want to learn and use. I highly recommend this book

Rune is pure gold or platinum, which ever is trading higher. Ingenuity paired with a genius comedic perspective is the key to Rune’s success. Rune will inspire you to learn and reach beyond any confines of everyday life. If you don’t have this book, you’re simply missing out!

I absolutely love this book! The material taught in here is, at the same time, beautiful, charming, and hilarious. There is some really cool stuff in here

Rune Klan, do you know of him? Well you should. He is a Danish virtuoso that blends magic and antics into a cocktail of entertainment. Rune's World is a beautifully curated masterpiece that has something for everyone. One part comic book, one part lecture notes. You will learn tricks, gags, and more. This should be on everyone's book shelf.

one of the best books I have read in these years.

Runes World is one of those books that I wish I was the only one who knew about it! It's full of pro magic from close up to stage!

I got the book a few days ago and have been flipping through it the last few days glancing from effect to effect and I enjoy reading at night so last night at midnight I layed down to "start" the book and read for maybe a 1/2 hour or so then fall asleep. Well.... my class this morning at Purdue was a struggle to say the least since I fell asleep at 4am with a pile of coins next to me! I consider myself a card guy and I know how to false transfer and j-palm and do flicker and 3/4 across (greg wilson) but really... thats it... and now I'm hooked on coins!!! The moves that Rune has come up with are incredible. You would read an explanation and say "thats not possible to do with your fingers!" and then through the great explanation and amazing illustrations... five minutes later you are doing them. Sure the coins are talking like crazy right now, but they ARE possible. Before reading this book, I always left the house with my deck in my back left pocket, real mans wallet in my back right, cell phone front left, and keys front right.... but now.... I'm not leaving without at least three pieces of silver! lol Thanks a lot Rune and Josh :p

Has anyone seen that green and white book that just came out called Rune’s World? It’s about the magic of Rune Klan.

As a professional magician in NYC, for awhile I have felt jaded in that I am only exposed to the magic in my own city. While I have attended a few conventions most of my exposure to outside magicians and especially international magicians is through conventions, books and dvds. Well several years ago when Josh Jay’s Talk about Tricks DVDs came out, I saw one of the strangest magic effects I’d ever seen, where Denmark magician Rune Klan brings out a beat up looking pad, shown to be a very used and oversized notepad with a bunch of beards draw on each page. A spectator calls stop as Rune flips through the pages and a page is opened to show a beard and two seconds later that same beard is now on Rune’s FACE! How cool, different, and creative. I viewed the rest of the dvds, looking out for more of Rune’s effects like that, and all I found were very technical but clever coin routines, and while I consider myself fairly proficient with coins, I was seeing subtleties, sleights, and presentations for coins that I had never seen before. For a good reason, they had titles like: Coins going through the floor? A pen and cap routine where they both end up on Rune’s face (which by the way was the starting point for Rick Merrill’s Grand Prix FISM Act)? Is it possible to add an extra phase in the “card shooting behind the back gag” that makes the original STRONGER(in my opinion)? And a matrix and coin and bottle routine that are EXTREMELY deceptive and magical.

Well at Magic Live! 2009 and The IBM/SAM combined convention I saw the material live in person. I met Rune saw in Rune’s hands the coins melting and being produced in the most elegant way I’ve ever seen with seemingly no conscience effort at all. I should mention he did a few gags with some socks at Magic Live! that brought the house down, but hey when the Danish guy on stage asks an audience member to choose between two dirty socks you can’t help but look and wonder what the heck is going on?

Without reading the book, I already know that Rune is very dedicated to his work, I assume he is practicing and constantly thinking about magic, and his demeanor on stage and in person makes it even more fun to watch.

I watched the free download from Vanishing Inc. and after seeing his stage work, I’m already inspired on new ways I can give my audiences the time of their (and mine) life, which as a professional magician is what I demand no less of myself. While I generally work in the family entertainment market, I know better than to duplicate his style, material, or use of language (I don’t speak much Danish!), but when I see someone from a different country than mine perform some of the most creative material I’ve seen to constant laughter, you have my undivided attention for sure.

I received the book today, I flipped through it and see a beautifully done(Josh jay), beautifully written, well illustrated (Tony Dunn), and did I mention that the close-up material are in 5 WELL organized and structured Acts, or that the entire stand-up show is in comic book form, that’s right, comic book form. And there’s an even explanations in his stage show as to WHY each effect is where it is, and how it sets the tone. Truly different. Just watch out for jokes about porn, tampons, and some of the most inappropriate jokes I’ve ever heard (from an American point of view on what’s appropriate on the stage).- which is why there is a disclaimer and this book is being sold to ages 18+. But for me those jokes and gags that could easily cross the line, are very refreshing in that they are dirty jokes but in good taste and are presented very well, if that makes any sense. Rune in the book and interview on the dvd talk about how he fell in love with comedy because of the honesty of it. (And as a comedy magician myself, I feel the same way).

Alright, now I have to stop this, so I can actually read through and devour this book!

By the way, if you didn’t get the memo Rune just performed one of the tricks in the book for the Queen of Denmark. (Something about a signed slice of ham appearing inside a roll of bread from a shoe that was just on fire!) Don’t believe me, check it on Youtube or vanishing inc.

Rune, Josh, and Andi- good stuff! Keep it comin’.

good video. There is a montage of Rune doing close up-mostly coin magic--from his younger days. Then an interview with him about his career-his journey from close up coin magician to national TV/comedy magic star in Denmark. I enjoyed learning about him, his approach. He is such a great performer. He doesn't teach any tricks in this video--it's more about his career path.

The best magician youve never heard of. I remember watching his 3 pieces of silver video in the mid nighties and cant wait to get the book. Rune Klan is an origiginal thinker and has some great stuff.

I thought this book was good. Some of the methods are not well explained to be honest. There is a good range of effects and the transposition effect I still do. It's quick and gets great reactions. It's a good book but not one of my favourites.

Honestly, as much as I love Rune and his performances this wasn't one of my favourite reads so far and the first part of the book is very coin heavy (not typically a coin magician) and unless able to already do coins would not recommend for a beginner, the second part of the book however was much more appealing and an easier read though it's not something I would rush to buy again

To start with I'm a great fan of rune klan and his magic since his video three pieces of silver". The reason rate this book so low is not because of the material - which is excellent and deserves all five stars possible - but the insufficient written explanations.
For example, the groundbreaking technique of rune's »falling retention« aka »viking vanish«, explained on page 38-39, lacks important details. And especially the two variations of the »viking vanish«, namely as a vanish of both of two coins without the help of the other hand (page 89-90) and as a click pass (page 93) retaining one of two coins in the other hand are in fact not explained at all. To understand the »falling retention« aka »viking vanish« and its two possible variations sufficiently and correctly you have to watch the video resp. DVD »three pieces of siver«.
Another example. I would have not understood the description of the »sleeve slide« on pages 111-112 of the book (for example, figure 6 does not show whether the arm is pronated or supinated) if I had not known the equivalent technique from Shoot Ogawa's trick »Where Did the Coins Go?«, described in "Genii", December 2003, pages 86-89. Shoot Ogawa describes there on page 89 in fact the same technique as »sleeve slide« (with a variation and some additional details). I don't know who was first with this technique because I couldn't find corresponding credits or references.
So, to summarize, the material in "rune's world" is excellent - but without the "three pieces of silver" DVD you will not get (full) benefit of rune's »falling retention« aka »viking vanish« and its superb variations.
