Jiro's Dream

By Andi Gladwin - Monday, September 16, 2019

Jiro Dreams of Sushi is a documentary focussing on an 85-year old sushi master, Jiro Ono. It's clear that Jiro has spent a lifetime working toward mastery of his craft and many of the things that he said jumped out at me as applying to magic, and any other skill. Right at the start of the documentary he eloquently sums up exactly how I feel about magic that was too good not to share:

"Once you decide on your occupation, you must immerse yourself in your work. You have to fall in love with your work. Never complain about your job. You must dedicate your life to mastering your skill. That's the secret of success ... and is the key to being regarded honorably." Jiro Ono

Lovely. Such common sense, so simply written is an elegant expression of a mantra we should all
keep close to our hearts. It helps focus our direction.
In it there is no place for nastiness, pettiness, chauvinism, jealousy or hate. Only discovery, artistry,
realization and excellence.

There is also a good documentary about Jiro on Netflix if you get a chance to watch it.
