It’s often hard to separate hype from worthy praise, but we’ll try to be completely transparent: V&B close-up pads at the finest close-up pads available.

Over the last two years, we’ve worked side-by-side with the Bosch family to develop a range of close-up pads which are, without question, the world’s finest. Each mat is handmade-to-order in the Netherlands. The care and attention to detail that goes into each one is breathtaking, and each mat is made of a blend of the finest woods and textiles on offer.

For thirty years, the Bosch family have been manufacturing exquisite furniture in The Netherlands. They are a family of artisans and their work has been sought after by some of the most famous names in Europe, including the British Royal Family.

Each close-up pad is unique to its owner, so we have made sure that you have complete flexibility when constructing yours. YOU determine the appearance and finish.

Pick one of five base options
The regular mat features a slimline base which makes it the perfect portable solution. This is the base to choose if your travel with your mat and are looking for an affordable, gorgeous magic accessory. We offer three colors to choose from: black, brown and white. We also offer a vegan-friendly options too.

The deluxe pad has a thicker surface with a full rim around it, whereas this, regular pad has a slim hard base that does not protrude around the edges.

Choose one or more color surface
These surfaces are ideal for manipulating doubles on the table with cards, or sliding coins silently during “Shadow Coins” style routines. You can even choose multiple surfaces, as they can easily be changed out (and are even compatible with our deluxe bases). Sustainability is very important to us so none of our surfaces are made from animal products. They are all vegan friendly, and some are even water resistant.

Engrave your logo directly onto the pad
If you want to add the ultimate personal touch, you can have your mat engraved. Using a laser engraver, we can emboss your name, logo, or initials into the surface of your pad. You can choose the size and positioning. Our graphic designers will work with you to make sure that your pad is personalized in exactly the way you want it. To ensure precision, you’ll receive a digital mockup to approve before your pad is manufactured.

One of the great joys of working with the Bosch family has been watching how they work. Perfection is everything to them. Every single pad is made with intense care and attention to detail. More importantly, everything is sourced and produced in a sustainable way that we can all be proud of.

The Bosch family have spent thirty years mastering their art, and now, thanks to the V&B Close-Up Pad, they are going to help us master ours.

Customer reviews for V&B Close-Up Mat - Regular

Just received my V&B Close-Up Mat - Regular. I will have to say that the materials are really fine - I chose the real leather base, and the mat feels like suede. This mat will be the one that I will be proud to use at all times. The only thing that I would like to see soon, is some other size options. I find that having a much larger space is more advantageous for many types of performances: like wide card spreads. I would like to have the option to choose a 24, 28 or 32 inch wide surface. Otherwise, this is a beautiful product.

This review is strictly for the regular base, not the deluxe base or pads.

I've been looking for a quality close up mat for years and these immediately caught my eye. I always do a lot of research before big purchases and saw nothing but rave reviews for these. Needless to say, I was very excited to get mine. I ordered a regular base because I don’t like the size of the rim on the deluxe and wanted a lower profile. I received my base recently, and it was more or less folded in half during shipping and has a giant crack right through the center. I don’t fault the manufacturer (or Vanishing Inc) for a shipping defect, and VI customer service corrected it swiftly and professionally. Although, the damage did give me a closer look at the inner materials and construction. This is basically a $150 piece of cardboard sloppily covered in leather. The leather is unevenly cut, and you can still see the black marking lines where it wasn't cut straight. Glue has seeped out from the around the edges and it’s all sticky with flecks of shaved leather stuck on. If that’s the quality then that’s the quality, but it should be priced appropriately. For $150 I had much higher expectations, but I wouldn’t pay more than $30 for it.

  • Rohan asks: Why are these pads so expensive? Can they offer something affordable in the near future? Lets say at about 50$ or so? Because this is extremely high priced...Many magic effects or great books like Mnemonica etc also aren't priced that high...! But I really liked their work on this..!

    • 1. Vanishing Inc. Magic responds: Great question. Let me help shed some light on it for you. Firstly, every mat is handmade, to order. There is no mass production here. Everything from the sawing of the wood, to the stitching, finishing and packaging. They are a work of art. Secondly, these are made of the finest material that money can buy. No expense has been spared. Thirdly, each mat is made, to order, in the Netherlands. They are then shipped to you for free (remember that we offer free shipping). These are expensive, but you are getting a BEAUTIFUL work of art. If you are looking for cheaper options, we have plenty of those too.
    • 2. Joshua answers: Rohan, do you think you could recreate this pad for $50 and still have room for profit? This type of custom Work requires quite the attention to detail and effort. There are nice affordable options out there, but this is a whole different level.
    • 3. Joey answers: I was fortunate enough to buy straight from Sven the artisan that's hand crafting these beautiful pad a couple months ago. Heres somethings to consider. This pad is not something you roll up and put in a drawer. This pad you put on display. I talked with Sven through FB and he helped me decide what route to go to fit my needs. Once I recieved it, the first thing he had me do was spill water on it. I thought he was crazy. I did though and wiped it right off. I had a Dan Dave pad that was awesome craftsmanship and also 400 dollars if I remember right. V&B pads are of equal quality or better because the material is just different, and I have two differnt colors for when the time arises and the act calls for it. I'd say at a 200 price point you wont find a better pad or even a 300 dollar price point. I used Brian Brushwoods arena which is also a great pad at 4-500 dollars but still I would and will continue to use V&B, I paid more for my pad because I had it shipped from half way across the world and paid in pounds instead of dollars so this is a very unsolicited review/ answer to your question. You get what you pay for in most cases except here you get more then what you pay for. Pay for quality, if you want a 20 dollar pad that smells like rubber then I agree this pad isn't for you. if you want a piece of art that you can use to enhance all the time you put into your craft then buy a V&B pad.
  • Michael asks: What is the difference between the regular pad here and the regular pad on the V&B website? The price is significantly cheaper there.

    • 1. Vanishing Inc. Magic responds: We offer options that are not available direct. You are also not accounting for shipping and handling charges, or import duty.
    • 2. Michael answers: Thanks - what are those options please? The difference is significant - around £65. (97 euros v £150) Import duty would not be applicable if having sent to UK.
  • Marcos asks: Is there a option to just get a custom insert? I all ready have the Deluxe close up pad with a insert. I would like another custom insert.

    • 1. Vanishing Inc. Magic responds: Yes, you certainly can: https://www.vanishingincmagic.com/magic-accessories/deluxe-close-up-pad-insert/
  • Danny asks: Can we order a mat that is bigger in size than what is offered here?

    • 1. Vanishing Inc. Magic responds: For sure! For custom pads, please email magic@vanishingincmagic.com
